Day 2: El Elyon
Verse: Genesis 14:19 NKJV “And he blessed him and said: ‘Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth.’”
Devotional: El Elyon means “God Most High.” It carries such a powerful truth. God is not just present. He is above all things. There is nothing higher, nothing greater, and nothing outside of His authority. We first see this name in Genesis 14 after Abram returns from battle. He had just experienced a victory, but he didn’t take credit for it. Instead, he was reminded that it was God Most High who gave him the strength and the outcome. Abram understood something we often forget. God is the source, we are not. This name helps us put things back in the right place. There are times in life when things feel bigger than they should.
A situation grows in our mind. A conversation replays over and over. A problem starts to feel like it is in control. Before long, we are carrying weight we were never meant to carry. El Elyon reminds us to look up. Psalm 97:9 says, “For You, Lord, are most high above all the earth; You are exalted far above all gods.” That means whatever is in front of you right now is still under Him. It may feel close to you, but it’s not above Him. Sometimes the issue is not that God is distant. It is that we are looking at everything from the wrong perspective. We are looking straight ahead instead of looking up. Isaiah 55:9 says, “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways.” God sees what we cannot see. He understands what we don’t. He is not trying to catch up with your life. He is already over it. Daniel 4:35 says, “He does according to His will… No one can restrain His hand.” That can feel uncomfortable if we are trying to stay in control, but it becomes incredibly comforting when we trust Him.
The One who is over everything is also good, faithful, and steady. When you begin to understand El Elyon, something shifts. You stop trying to manage everything yourself. You stop giving so much attention to what feels overwhelming. Instead, you begin to place things back where they belong, under God. Today is a reminder that you do not have to carry what only God can handle. He is El Elyon. He is above it. And He is still in control.
Prayer: God, You are El Elyon, the Most High. You are above everything I face, even when it does not feel that way. I need to be reminded of that today. I have allowed some things to feel bigger than they should. I have carried weight that I was never meant to carry. Help me to lift my eyes and see You clearly again. You are not distant. You are not overwhelmed. You are over every situation in my life. Teach me to trust You more and to stop trying to control what belongs to You. I place my concerns back into Your hands today. You are God Most High, and I choose to rest in that truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
