Day 18: King of Kings
Verse: Revelation 19:16 NKJV
“And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS
AND LORD OF LORDS.”
Devotional: King of Kings is a name that speaks of authority. It means there is no one above Him. No ruler, no power, no authority that compares to who He is. Every king, every leader, every system ultimately answers to Him. In a world where authority is often questioned or misused, it can be difficult to fully trust it. We have seen leaders fail, promises broken, and power handled poorly. Because of that, we can hesitate to fully surrender to anyone’s authority. But Jesus is not like any earthly king. His authority isn’t self-serving, unstable, or temporary. His authority is perfect, righteous, and unchanging. Psalm 103:19 says, “The Lord has established His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all.” There is no part of life that falls outside of His rule. When we call Jesus King of Kings, we aren’t just acknowledging who He is. We are choosing to place ourselves under His authority.
That is where this becomes personal. We all answer to something. Our own desires, our emotions, the opinions of others, or the pressures around us. Something is always influencing our decisions and direction. King of Kings calls us to a different response. It calls us to surrender. Luke 6:46 says, “But why do you call Me Lord, Lord, and not do the things which I say?” Recognizing Jesus as King means allowing Him to lead our lives, not just influence them. It isn’t about losing something. It’s about gaining and sitting under the right leadership. His ways are better and His direction is trustworthy. His rule brings life, not control. Isaiah 9:6–7 says, “And the government will be upon His shoulder… Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end.” His leadership brings peace, not pressure.
There is also confidence in this name. If Jesus is King of Kings, then nothing we face is outside of His authority. No situation is too large; no opposition is too strong. He does not compete for control. He already has it. Today is a reminder to look at your life honestly. What is leading you, shaping your decisions, and holding authority in your life? King of Kings invites you to place all of that under Him. Not out of obligation, but out of trust. He is the only One worthy to lead your life.
Prayer: God, You are the King of Kings. There is no one above You, and Your authority is perfect and unchanging. I recognize that You aren’t just part of my life, You are over it. Help me to fully surrender to Your leadership. Show me where I have allowed other things to take control in Your rightful place. My thoughts, my fears, or my desires. I want You to be the One who leads me. Teach me to trust Your ways, even when they are different from my own. Your authority brings life, and I choose to follow You. I place my life under Your rule today. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
