Day 1: Elohim
Verse: Genesis 1:1 NKJV “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
Devotional: The very first name we are introduced to in Scripture is Elohim. It is the name used in Genesis 1:1 when God creates everything that exists. Before we ever see what God does, we are introduced to who He is. He is Elohim, the Creator. Elohim speaks of God’s power, authority, and majesty. It reminds us that God is not limited, not dependent, and not in need. He simply is. Everything we see and everything we are came from Him. Psalm 33:6 says, “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.” God didn’t struggle to create. He spoke, and it was.
This name also carries something deeper. The word Elohim is plural in form, yet it is used with a singular meaning. From the very beginning, we see a glimpse of the fullness of God. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit present and active in creation. Genesis 1:26 says, “Let Us make man in Our image.” God has always existed in perfect unity and relationship. When we understand God as Elohim, it begins to reshape how we see everything. If He is the Creator, then He has authority over creation. That includes our lives. We do not define truth. We do not decide purpose. He does. Colossians 1:16 says, “For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible… All things were created through Him and for Him.” That means your life is not random. You are not here by accident. You were created by Elohim and for Elohim. Sometimes we live as though we are responsible for holding everything together.
We carry pressure, stress, and fear because we forget who God is. But Elohim is not overwhelmed. He is not reacting. He is not trying to figure things out. Isaiah 40:28 reminds us, “The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary.” If God is powerful enough to create the heavens and the earth, then He is more than able to handle what concerns you today. Elohim invites us to trust Him not just as Creator of the world, but as Creator of our lives. He formed you, He knows you, and He has purpose for you. When we surrender to Him, we are not losing control. We are placing our lives back into the hands of the One who designed them. Today is a reminder to step back and recognize who God is. He is Elohim. He is greater than what you face, stronger than what you fear, and fully capable of leading your life.
Prayer: God, You are Elohim, the Creator of heaven and earth. From the very beginning, You have shown Your power, Your authority, and Your presence. I acknowledge today that You are God and I am not. You created me on purpose and for a purpose. Help me to trust You with every part of my life. Where I have tried to take control, I surrender it back to You. Where I have carried pressure and fear, remind me that You are not overwhelmed. You spoke the world into existence, and nothing is too difficult for You. Strengthen my faith to trust You as my Creator, my Sustainer, and my source. Teach me to walk in alignment with You today. I want to live for You, not just believe in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
