My God My God Why Have You Forsaken Me
Darkness fell at noon. The sinless Son of God hung between heaven and earth. In the middle of unimaginable suffering, Jesus spoke words that reveal the depth of His love and the power of the cross.
In this message, we look at two powerful statements Jesus made from the cross:
First, a quiet word of care. Even in agony, Jesus saw His mother and His disciple standing nearby and formed a new family at the foot of the cross (John 19:26–27). The cross is not only where we find a Savior, it’s where we become family. When we truly come to the cross, we are invited into a new spiritual family that carries one another’s burdens and walks through life together.
Second, a loud cry of anguish. As darkness covered the land, Jesus cried out, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:45–46). In that moment, Jesus stepped into the deepest darkness of human experience. He bore the weight of the world’s sin and the separation it causes so that we would never have to be forsaken.
Jesus wasn’t just quoting Psalm 22, He was fulfilling it. What begins with a cry of “Why?” ends with hope, redemption, and the promise that the whole world will turn to the Lord.
The cross tells us something powerful: Jesus is present in the very place where we feel God’s absence.
No matter what you’re facing, loss, failure, addiction, heartbreak, or unanswered prayers, there is no darkness so deep that Christ’s love cannot reach it. Because of the cross, we are invited into a life that is holy, redeemed, and never forsaken.
